I do the same thing as Virm. If you can't get it to work, that's probably because you haven't set the card correctly in the dosbox configuration. MoM sound works like a charm here. Although the music isn't of such quality that the game needs it, really ;)

I like that verdant plane example. As for access, you could think of a spell that turns earth nodes into gateways (which would imply that that's where the earth nodes get their power from in the first place). Using this logically means that fire and sorcery would be two other potential planes.

In the fantasy world of MoM, there are no limits to the kind of race someone can imagine. I think it's naive to try and define all possible races and their interactions beforehand (which is what youre trying to do with those keys, in an abstract way).

such tags would still have to be defined, which would limit the possible outcomes of the table, or if you user can define them, then all races need to be updated whenever a new tag is introduced.

It might be easier to define a default 'external relations' modifier and then note a list of exceptions.

The thing that made me stop playing baldur's gate 2 was the npc's that kept interrupting the game with their own inane stories. I'd be halfway into some dungeon with still quite some things to do, and suddenly my healer walks up, blabs out some nonsense story and walks off, leaving me stuck out ther...

Another possible solution is not to make it a problem in the first place. A lot of games work with that system, and yes it is possible to switch sides if you so want to. indeed. A* where you limit the maximum cost of the tile to the movement speed of the unit should do it.
