MOM Sound

Can anyone suggest settings to get sound for Master of Magic? If possible, a setup for win98 and xp would be appreciated. The best I can do is get sound effects, but not music. I don't know how easy it is to get a 16 bit soundcard anymore, but maybe you guys just use dos emulators or something. Anyways, TIA!

I use dosbox on my Windows XP Pro system.

Works great.

Can you give the list of commands you use?

Mounting drives, etc. always seems to confuse me..

I modified the configuration file so I didn't need to type it every time, as well as setting the processor cycles to max (I don't use music) and fullscreen.

To set the directory where the program is:

mount c c:\mps\magic

To mount the cdrom drive:

mount d d:\ -t cdrom

Okay, but what sound settings do I need to set INSTALL.EXE with? Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro? There are a lot of settings, none of which apply to my current setup (modern soundcard).

If you look in the config file for DOSBox, there's a section for the soundblaster settings. In my experience it honestly doesn't matter what you use in the config file, DOSBox will translate it to work with Windows, but the settings you see in that section (address, DMA, etc.) are the info to use in the MoM setup (or the setup of sound in any dos game running in DOSBox, for that matter).

I never have much luck with the sound in emulating MoM...I've actually heard that DOSBox doesn't do well with soundblaster emulation, or at least didn't through much of its history. What I can do is suggest that you look for a front-end, which makes setting up a profile for MoM really simple. I use dbgl (DOSBox game launcher), but, at least in the version I have, I can't vouch for the audio tab much.

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/DOSBoxFrontends

With most of these, trying different solutions is a matter of checking different menus, double-clicking the profile to launch the program, and testing it until it's just right. So you can select a sound device from the install.exe and then try to pick the right options to make it emulate what the game expects to find.

I do the same thing as Virm. If you can't get it to work, that's probably because you haven't set the card correctly in the dosbox configuration. MoM sound works like a charm here. Although the music isn't of such quality that the game needs it, really ;)

Awesome. This is too cool for words.

Two questions though. I'm using Dosblaster 2.5. When I get into dosbox:

1) is there a .bat file that you can make so you don't have to retype, in my case,

mount c c:\masterr
c:
wizards

2) is there a way to set starting cycles at 36000 vs. 3000? I always have to hit alt+F12 a lot of times to get the game running at a good speed.

You can launch dosbox with a conf file.
dosbox -conf<myfile.conf> magic.exe. See the readme.txt of dosbox.
You can mount and change directory in the [autoexec] section
You can preconf the cycle in [cpu] section, but setting the value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
Personnaly, I use a .cmd to change directory to dosbox, then launch dosbox with a confile and the full path of MoM (so no need to mount C or D drive)
MoM.CMD :
cd "D:/Program Files/DOSBox-0.72"
dosbox -conf mom.conf D:\mom\magic.exe

Search for DosBox forum if you have pb.

Thanks. It was easy to configure after I downloaded dosbox specifically.

I was running dosblaster that is basically dosbox but with a GUI for settings.. but the settings weren't taking hold properly for whatever reason.

Another question.

Certain spells have a "spell code" but this is not producing any sound, e.g. "word of death", "death spell", "counter magic", etc. Am I just not hearing these sounds, or are there not supposed to be any?

I had no problems with sound at all with dosbox. Maybe try reconfiguring the sound through the 'install' command?

Just to update. I use Dos Box and I have no problems with sound. This program is the surefire way to get MOM with sound in all its glory. Check it out if you don't already use it.
