Forum upgraded to latest phpBB 3.2.7, which also fixes the PHP error. Let me know if anything else is broken.

I have updated the board to latest phpBB version, removed all users with 0 posts, added a custom anti-spam measure to registration, and re-enabled registration.

Updated from phpBB 3.0.6 to 3.0.10 and wiped all users with 0 posts, but otherwise no changes made.

I've been considering starting on an open-source cross-platform C++ remake using Qt's QGraphicsView.

Legit posts can bypass the spam protection via the secret handshake that is displayed when a post is rejected, so that is not a huge issue. And it can be tuned to allow through known people, if needed...
