9600

My personal best is 9,600 (and amusingly, I was not trying to get a high score!)

Starting setup:
3x Life
3x Chaos
3x Nature
1x Sorcery
Node Mastery

I played the game to see how many spells I could get (3 books in a magic colour allows you to trade for very rare spells and get very rare spells from lairs, nodes, etc.). I found the 2 extra sorcery books I was hoping dearly for :)

I ended up with so many spells that, where the research cost of the Spell of Mastery is reduced by 50% of the research cost of all the other spells that you know, by the time I researched the Spell of Mastery, it cost me zero to research 8) (I was disappointed that they actually accounted for this! I wanted to see the game say it was going to cost something like -500 research!)

Most of the reason I got a big score was that I would only ever attack the AI wizard's fortresses, never any of their other cities. Every time you take their fortress, you can get a couple of their spells, so I was trying to continually banish them, let them cast the Spell of Return, then re-banish them to try to get more and more spells. By the end of the game, doing this had given me 461 fame which accounted for a big portion of my score.

was this on hard or impossible? This sounds like an interesting, and challenging, way to play

Impossible. Hard is boring :)

Someone I've been emailing back and forth about MoM IME since the early days e-mail me recently with a 9,690, beating my personal best by 90 points so I'm gutted now  I've no idea what game set up he used!

Isn't it possible to get a - well, not infinite, but extremely high score, simply by gaining more fame per turn than you lose by taking the turn itself? you lose what, 2 points a turn? and one fame is worth two points? an average one fame a turn isn't hard to come by once you establish a power base - you could even go so far as to eliminate all but one opponent and then leave a couple powerful stacks near a couple of his crippled cities, just taking his capital and letting him have it back repeatedly to farm for points. My question here is - do strategies like this have any sort of diminishing returns, or is one's score limited only by their patience and perserverance?

Yeah but I hardly believe that, unless they can explain to me how they got it.

One of these days I'll have another go at it - I'll be delighted if I can hit 10,000 :)

You can download a save and an explanation too.

he had 149 spells +149
2400 townsfolk +1200
4 banished wizards +200
4550 fame +9100
finished by 1482 +12
Spell of mastery +250

And on impossible mode.

Yeah but that's not quite what I mean, I mean how did he get 4,550 fame? The only way I know of to get huge amounts of fame is to let enemy wizards keep coming back (casting Spell of Return) and then re-banishing them.

That's basically how I got my 9600 - but the problem I found was every time I banished a wizard, I'd take over that city, leaving him one less city. Yes, they're still expanding with settlers while this is happening, but eventually they simply run out of space on the map to put new cities. That's basically what forced my game to end - the enemy wizards all ran out of space!

I suppose you could try every time you banish them, raze the city instead, but I thought razing lost you fame. So how they got 10x the fame I did is a mystery to me.

You get fame for defreating armies of 5 units+ or so.

a way i often use to get a good score, is only summon heroes with famous and get them exp. with 6 of those halfgods u can gather a lot of fame.

That's quite a cool idea, for each Legendary hero you get +27 fame and if you can get Super Legendary, +40. So that'll get you something around an extra +200 fame.

I still don't get the 4,550 fame... if you raze wizards' capitals so that they have space to expand so you don't kill them off, you lose a lot of fame from killing such large cities. Anyway I'll give it another go one of these times. I tried a few games recently with a similar setup to my 9,600 score and never managed to get a good start.

Ok I just do not understand how they got such high fame. My 9600 game, the only enemy cities I attacked were the wizards' fortress. I'd capture the city and banish the wizard (for +9 fame each time) but sooner or later, they simply run out of cities to come back to so you can't keep this up forever. I only ended up with 461 fame - so only just over 10% what they had - not even close.

Recently I tried a game where instead of capturing the city containing the enemy wizards' fortress, I razed it - thereby giving them space to build another city, so they could keep coming back forever. But that didn't work either, since now I'm losing 4 fame for razing big cities, with +5 for banishing a wizard, so I make a grand +1 fame for each banish - never going to get a high score like that either! So given up on this game.

I'm wondering how if I should forget completely about banishing wizards, and try to get high fame by parking myself in a small number of cities and letting the enemy wizards send reams of armies after me - they can easily send a size 4 army against you every turn, so you get at least +1 fame every turn. And then only go and capture an enemy city and banish the wizard if you see them casting the spell of mastery....???

well, if you have 6 super legendary heroes, all holed up in a couple cities, with all of your foes alive and well and at their full strength, and somehow managed to getting them to attack you in large stacks each round, and you just sit there doing nothing but that except banishing them every so often should they start casting spell of mastery, (or better yet, cast it yourself so all of them instantly start sending their best against you) and just camping out, maybe you can actually get a ridiculous amount of fame that way.

There is a bug.....

I remember reading about a fame bug perhaps in the mom faq. It would give you a super high fame score. Off hand I dont remember how. Perhaps thats how that 4550 fame was acheived.
