Ascendancy

Post by Implode »

Anyone else play Ascendancy? Its very similar to MoM, in that its a turn based civilization-type game... and also very like MoM in that the AI is crap. Actually the AI is *so* bad it makes the AI in MoM look like a genius.

But its still a fun game, so I tried to find a way to play it that was really challenging - so I tried playing only allowing myself to build small ships. They're *really* bad, by the time you have an engine/power/star lane drive, you only have 2 spaces to put anything useful in.

After a few attempts, managed to win using only small ships with the Antagonizer patch, on hostile, 7 species, size 2 galaxy (one above the smallest... the smaller they are the harder it is), never using my species' special ability. Just thought anyone else who likes this game might fancy trying this :)

Strange, in my experience with Master of Orion the smaller the map the easier for me. But then again, I play with Psilons most of the games :-)

In Ascendancy at least, the bigger the map, the longer it is until you meet your opponents. That gives you longer to build up plenty of defence, and what the AI is particularly bad at is mounting a good offensive so it doesn't take much defence to be able to hold them off indefinitely and win the game far too easily.

On the really tiny maps its very difficult to get started, because one of the AI players has showed up and invaded you before you've even researched how to build a half decent ship gun to defend with :)

I've never played MOO...

MOO and MOO2 are great games. I still break them out and play them every once in a while. They made MOO3 too complicated (and when it came out I no longer had endless summers of free time) but it did amaze me, all the same.

I think Civilization, Master of Orion, and Master of Magic are my top favorite classics.

I peeked at the site. Ascendancy looks a lot like MOO, though it sounds like MOO has a much better AI, and better graphics.

I'm not too sure about the 'better graphics' thing :-). Honestly MOO has some very bad looking sprites but it's the overall feel of the game that makes it such a great game.
